Washington, D.C. – Congressman Colin Allred (TX-32), released the following statement after the Biden Administration announced the first ten prescription drugs Medicare would negotiate under new provisions passed into law by the Inflation Reduction Act. Allred has been a champion of lowering the cost of prescription drugs since his first day in Congress.
“With the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act, we took on Big Pharma and won – and now we are finally lowering drug costs for seniors on Medicare,” said Allred. “About 9 million folks on Medicare with diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, heart failure and more use these drugs to stay alive and now Medicare will negotiate a fair price. My mom is on Medicare and is a breast cancer survivor so I know how important it is that we keep working to lower costs for folks across the board. Let’s build on this progress and extend savings from the Inflation Reduction Act to folks on the private market.”
The news of which drugs will be negotiated under Medicare Part D comes after Medicare’s cap on insulin prices at $35 a month went into effect earlier this year. Soon after, several insulin manufacturers announced significantly lower costs to people on private plans as well. By 2030, as many as 80 prescription drugs will be selected for negotiated prices through Medicare.
Negotiations for the following group of drugs will begin in 2023 and go into effect in 2026:
- Eliquis – Prevention and treatment of blood clots
- Jardiance – Diabetes; Heart failure
- Xarelto – Prevention and treatment of blood clots; Reduction of risk for patients with coronary or peripheral artery disease
