Calls for Bipartisan Reform to Fix Broken Immigration System
Washington, D.C. – Congressman Colin Allred (TX-32), released the following statement on the ending of Title 42:
“As Title 42 ends, it’s clear the Biden Administration has fallen short on getting Texas border communities the support they need, as multiple previous administrations have before. Whether it’s beds, buses or supplies, our border towns have limited resources and are in danger of being overwhelmed. It should never have come to this point.
“While I’m encouraged that the Administration is opening processing centers throughout Latin America, has reached productive border security agreements and is sending 1,500 active-duty troops to the border; these initiatives are a beginning, not a fix.
“In the short term, the Administration needs to rush vital resources to the Texas border, from the Rio Grande Valley to El Paso. Texans are kind and compassionate, but our border communities are understandably fearful that this humanitarian crisis will stretch local resources to the breaking point.
“As I have said many times, our immigration system is broken. We need a complete, bipartisan overhaul that both secures the border, provides a reliable future for our Dreamers, modernizes our asylum system and treats folks with dignity and respect.
“Texas needs more border patrol agents and technology to keep our 1,254-mile border with Mexico secure and stop the flow of deadly fentanyl. We also need to speed up and clarify our asylum process, while expanding legal pathways for migrants who want to work and help grow our economy. An average asylum case takes five years to process, which is unacceptable.
“Too many politicians use the crisis at our border and our border communities for cynical political gain. It’s time for both sides to move past the talking points and come together to address this crisis with the seriousness it deserves. I will always work to be part of the solution.”
