Cold Weather Information | City of Garland

A strong arctic cold front is headed our way. Temperatures are falling and will remain below freezing until Christmas Day. If any City services are impacted, updates will be posted to this page and on social media.

Be sure to provide extra protection for pets and plants. Check on your neighbors, too!

Here are a few specific reminders and tips.

From Garland Water Utilities:

Make sure your pipes are protected.

  • Disconnect water hoses
  • Turn off automatic sprinkler systems
  • Cover or wrap outdoor faucets
  • Make sure everyone in the house knows how to turn off the water to your house in an emergency. See our how-to video to learn more. Meter keys are available at the Utility Customer Services Department at the Charles E. Duckworth building, located at 217 N. Fifth St.
From Garland Power & Light:

We are responding to scattered power outages. Check the GP&L Outage Page for information about how to report an outage, our current outage map and more.

Battery backup or a generator can be incredibly helpful during a power outage or emergency, but they need to be in working condition. Remember to test your battery backup or generator, and operate your generator safely. Check out these guidelines.

GP&L also provides important tips for preparing for possible weather-related outages.

Ways to save on your utility bills during this cold snap:

  • Set the thermostat to 68° degrees, or lower when sleeping
  • Turn off unnecessary lights & electronics
  •  Close blinds & drapes to retain heat
  • More money-saving tips from GP&L
From Atmos Energy:

If you think you smell gas, act fast! Leave the area immediately and call 911 and the Atmos Energy emergency number, 866-322-8667. More natural gas safety information is available on the Atmos website.

From Garland Fire Department:

  • Keep combustible objects at least three feet away from portable heating devices.
  • Only buy heaters evaluated by a nationally recognized laboratory, such as Underwriters Laboratories (UL).
  • Check to make sure the portable heater has a thermostat control mechanism and will switch off automatically if the heater falls over.
  • Only use crystal clear K-1 kerosene in kerosene heaters. Never overfill it. Use the heater in a well-ventilated room away from curtains and other flammable items.
  • Often called the invisible killer, carbon monoxide (CO) is an odorless, colorless gas created when fuels such as gasoline, wood, coal, propane, etc. do not burn completely. In the home, heating and cooking equipment that burn fuel are potential sources of CO. Carbon monoxide incidents are more common during the winter months, and in residential properties.
  • Keep candles at least 12 inches away from flammable materials or consider using flameless candles.
