Sachse High School Teacher Awarded TFLA Teacher of the Year | GARLAND ISD
American Sign Language is a natural language that serves as the predominant sign language of Deaf communities in the United States. ASL is a complete and organized visual language that employs both manual and nonmanual features.
According to the World Health Organization, over 5% of the world’s population – or 430 million people – require rehabilitation to address their ‘disabling’ hearing loss. And it is estimated that by 2050 over 700 million people – or one in every ten people – will have disabling hearing loss. These eye-opening stats are why educating our students on American Sign Language is beneficial. Our ASL teachers in GISD are invaluable.
We proudly announce that Kristina Sedberry, Sachse High School ASL teacher, won Teacher of the Year for the state of Texas from The Texas Foreign Language Association. The award recognizes outstanding academic achievement in American Sign Language studies and their involvement in the Deaf community.
