Dallas College’s Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations will include a special Dia de los Muertos event at Mountain View Campus!
Beginning on Oct. 26 through Nov. 2, 4-7 p.m., you can check out an exhibit of altars made by Mountain View students, local elementary, middle and high school students, and community members.
The Dia de los Muertos Festival will take place Wednesday, Nov. 2, 5-9 p.m. The event will feature activities, music, food vendors, craft vendors and live performances, and the competition for the altars will take place at 7 p.m.
Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a Mexican observance meant to reunite the living and the dead. It’s part of a three-day holiday that starts with Halloween, is followed by All Saints Day and ends with Dia de los Muertos on Nov. 2.
To honor lost loved ones during this special time, friends and family members decorate ofrendas, or altars, with photos, flowers and small gifts. These offerings are meant to encourage the souls of the dead to come back and join their living family members in one last celebration. One of the most recognizable staples of Dia de los Muertos is brightly colored skulls, called calaveras. Calaveras can be made of clay or sugar, or even painted onto the face of someone participating in the festivities.
