GARLAND HIGH SCHOOL: Principal Hines Weekly Message December 14th, 2020

Media

Garland High School issued the following announcement on Dec. 14.

This is your principal, Holly Hines, with your weekly update for the week of December 14th  .

Grades:  As we are concluding the fall semester, please be sure to review your student’s grades and attendance. While you may notice a different grade in Canvas, Skyward is the official gradebook used to determine earned credits, UIL eligibility, and GPA. GPA is in full effect, for the 20-21 school year, and based upon semester averages. If your student did not pass a class(es), for the first or second cycle, GHS does offer various recovery opportunities. These include making up missing assignments with the teacher of record and/or taking that portion of the class on-line (if available). Please reach out to the teacher of a specific course to obtain access to missing assignments. If your student did not pass three or more classes, please e-mail Craig Klement @ CTklemen@garlandisd.net for intervention and recovery options.

First semester averages are based off cycle one and cycle two averages. This semester average will determine earned grade points and will be posted on the official transcript.

Second Cycle Exams and Exam Exemptions: All students have the opportunity to exempt cycle exams (given the week of 12/14) in any course as long as they are projected to pass the corresponding course (for the semester) by the week of 12/7/2020. Asynchronous assignment opportunities will be required on our early release days (for exam exempt students). See link to the exam schedule below. Exam exempt students will not be required to attend classes on 12/17 or 12/18 (with parent permission) but the asynchronous assignment must be submitted on each of those days to their second period classes. The asynchronous survey (one for each day) will be posted on Canvas and must be completed each day (17th and 18th) in order for exam exempt students to earn attendance credit.

Any student who is absent for exams, will need to schedule a time (with their instructor) to make-up the exam(s) the week of January 5th, 2021.

Additional Grade Support/Tutoring and TSI-A testing (Free!): GHS offers remote and in-person options for students to receive support in their classes on select Saturdays. This program is called Achievement Academy. All students are welcome. Our next Achievement Academy will be offered January 23rd and 30th (8:30 am-12:30pm). Please contact Sherita Rischer (srrische@garlandisd.net) to receive more information and sign-up.

In addition to tutoring, we also offer free TSI-A testing to our seniors. Please contact Ashley Wong (akwong@garlandisd.net) to sign up for the TSI-A in January.

March Intersession (March 8th through March 12th): Any student who did not pass one, or more, courses for the first semester will be scheduled to attend intersession in an effort to recover the credits/grades. We will also be offering enrichment and study session opportunities for any interested students. More details and information will be distributed in January.

Attendance: Many of you may have noticed different attendance codes in your student’s attendance profile. Due to the remote and face-to face instructional options, there are several codes utilized so we may accurately track attendance in both formats. We highly encourage all parents to periodically check your student’s attendance, in Skyward, and reach out to us with any questions.

Attendance Codes: F- Face-to-Face Present, S- Present Synchronous (Remote), Y- Present Asynchronous (Logged in Remotely outside of scheduled class time), A- Absent (Not in attendance for Face-to-Face or Remote Instruction), U- Unexcused Absence

Student and community safety is our number one priority. There are many new safety protocols for Face-to-Face students to follow. In addition to wearing a face mask/covering and bringing bottled water, it is highly recommended that students be not dropped off at school prior to 7:10am (if possible). Students arriving earlier will be seated in the cafeteria and/or gym in pre-determined socially distanced seats.  Students are to bring their charged devices to campus, as they will be needed for daily instruction.

Students should remain socially distant until we open our doors to allow them into school. Students will have their temperature checked and we will ensure they are wearing their mask appropriately. Students who do not comply with our mask requirements will receive one warning before we will conduct a parent conference. Subsequent violations may result in being switched to remote learning for the remainder of the grading cycle.

Instructional Format: Additionally, changing your student’s instructional format from Face to Face to Remote can be facilitated at the campus level. Parents/guardians may e-mail me to request this type of change at hhines@garlandisd.net.

You are always welcome visit our GHS website for Parent and Student Meeting Updates and Resources.

Please access the most recent parent meeting presentation for additional information and updates: https://bit.ly/GHSparentmeeting.

As a reminder, December 21st through January 4th will serve as winter break. There will be no classes.

On January 5th, 2021, all students will report to their B-day classes (virtually or in-person) as scheduled in Skyward. Please review the second semester schedule and be sure your student is aware of any changes. Hard copies of schedules will be available to students upon request on 1/5/21.

Thank you for choosing Garland High School! Stay safe and have a joyous and peaceful holiday break!
