CITY OF RICHARDSON: RCB 'Sleigh Ride' Virtual Performance

Microphonsing

City Of Richardson issued the following announcement on Nov. 25.

Performing “Sleigh Ride” by composer Leroy Anderson is an annual tradition for members of the Richardson Community Band and their many fans. Sadly, the song won’t be performed in front of a live audience this holiday season because of COVID-19 restrictions. The band instead is taking the classic hit to the virtual stage.

“We think its important to have a project like this because we think it brings joy. There is something special about music that is just a universal language that other things don’t communicate,” said Isaac Shutt, Concert Chair for the Richardson Community Band.

A total of 60 players participated in the band’s first ever video. To make it happen, they recorded themselves at home performing “Sleigh Ride,” and editors took care of the rest.

“Sleigh Ride is such a must. The piece, everybody knows it and they recognize it. They really associate it with good feelings, family, friends, putting their tree up. Sleigh ride is such an iconic piece,” said Robin Owens, Richardson Community Band Conductor

The band went all out for the video, wearing holiday attire like sweaters, blinking ties and Santa hats. It’s their way to help bring a little normalcy back to the community.

The Richardson Community Band is one of many organizations funded in part by the City through the Cultural Arts Commission.

“Part of our mission statement is for us to provide means of entertaining and bringing a sense of community to not only Richardson, but I think that extends to all of the North Texas area, the DFW area,” said Jane Chambers, Associate Conductor.

RCB’s “Sleigh Ride” performance will be available Nov. 27 on its Facebook page and its website.
