U.S. Representative Beth Van Duyne (R-TX-24) has introduced the One Citizen, One Seat Act, a bill aimed at ensuring the U.S. Census count reflects only American citizens. Van Duyne cited concerns over the accuracy of the 2020 Census, pointing to statements from the U.S. Census Bureau that acknowledged undercounts in several Republican states and overcounts in many Democrat states. She argued that these discrepancies affect federal funding distribution and congressional representation.

Van Duyne stated, “The egregious failures of the U.S. Census Bureau need to be corrected immediately by publishing an accurate census count based on American citizenship so Congress and the Executive Branch can appropriately direct trillions of dollars of federal spending where they are needed to rightfully serve the interests of the American people. Many Democrat led states were not only overcounted in the 2020 census, but they have been losing hundreds of thousands of American citizen residents in the ensuing years as people flee high tax, high regulation, ideologically insane bastions of Socialism. The One Citizen, One Seat Act is not only critical to correct federal funding formulas, but it will also serve as an important reminder of how inaccurate census counting has skewed the apportionment of congressional seats and electors with our Electoral College.”

The proposed legislation instructs the Secretary of Commerce to revise state population counts from the 2020 Decennial Census to include only U.S. citizens. It would also restrict federal grants from states that do not use this revised count for new programs involving Census data and grant funding.

Beth Van Duyne has a history of electoral victories in Texas’s 24th Congressional District. In 2024, she won against Sam Eppler with 60.3% of the vote. In 2022, she defeated Jan McDowell with 59.7%, and in 2020, she prevailed over Candace Valenzuela with 48.8%.
