Congresswoman Beth Van Duyne has criticized Senate Democrats in a series of posts on X, formerly Twitter, regarding the ongoing government shutdown. The comments, posted on November 4 and 5, 2025, focus on the duration of the shutdown and its impact on American citizens.
On November 4, Van Duyne wrote, “Today is day 35 of the Democrat Shutdown, tying the longest government shutdown in U.S. history. When will the Democrats stop using the American people as “leverage”?”
Later that day, she posted another message referencing labor union involvement: “We saw the largest government labor union telling Democrats to accept the clean, non-partisan continuing resolution over a week ago… Yet, our government is still shut down. It is far past time for the Senate Democrats to stop holding the American people hostage.”
On November 5, Van Duyne continued her criticism: “Unfortunately, Americans continue to be harmed by lost wages and unpaid benefits as Democrats choose to keep the government closed. They’ve admitted that they believe the “suffering” of the American people gives them “leverage” to pass their radical agenda.”
Beth Van Duyne represents Texas’s 24th congressional district. She has secured her seat in several recent elections: defeating Sam Eppler in 2024 with over 60% of the vote; Jan McDowell in 2022 with nearly 60%; and Candace Valenzuela in a close race in 2020.
The current government shutdown marks one of the longest in U.S. history. Congressional standoffs over funding have previously resulted in extended closures impacting federal employees and services.
